Why Do Time Zones Exist?

Before standardized time zones, every city kept its own local solar time, which caused chaos for railways and international communication. In 1884, the International Meridian Conference established Greenwich as the prime meridian, dividing the world into 24 zones each spanning 15 degrees of longitude. Today, the IANA timezone database maintains over 400 named time zones, accounting for political borders, DST rules, and historical changes.

UTC vs GMT: What's the Difference?

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is a time zone based on solar observations at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is a modern atomic time standard maintained by over 400 atomic clocks worldwide. While they differ by less than one second in practice, UTC is the global standard used by computing systems, aviation, and finance. GMT is a time zone; UTC is a time standard.

How Leap Years Work

A solar year is approximately 365.24219 days — not a whole number. To compensate, we add a leap day (February 29) every four years. But the full Gregorian rule has three parts: a year is a leap year if divisible by 4, except century years (divisible by 100) are not leap years, unless also divisible by 400. This means 2000 was a leap year but 1900 and 2100 are not.

How Date Math Works

Calculating exact durations between dates is more complex than it appears. Months have varying lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days), and leap years add an extra day every four years. Our calculator accounts for every leap year in your specific timeframe, ensuring that a "90-day visa" is calculated to the exact calendar day — not rounded to 3 months.

🤝 Global Business Meeting Planning

The Problem: You're in New York and need to schedule a sync with a developer in London and a designer in Tokyo.
The Solution: Add all three cities to your Time Hub. Use the manual converter to find a time that works for everyone — 9:00 AM New York is 2:00 PM London and 10:00 PM Tokyo. No more "I thought you meant my time" emails.

📋 Project Deadline Calculation

The Problem: Your contract states a project must be completed exactly 90 days from today.
The Solution: Open the Calendar Calculator, set today as the start date, and count forward 90 days to find the exact delivery date — accounting for every varying month length and leap day automatically.

✈️ Travel & Flight Schedule Tracking

The Problem: Your flight departs Paris at 10:00 PM and arrives in Dubai 7 hours later. You need to tell your driver what time to pick you up.
The Solution: Add Paris and Dubai to your dashboard. When it's 10:00 PM in Paris, see the current time in Dubai. Add the flight duration to get your exact local arrival time — no mental math required.

🛂 Visa Validity & Passport Tracking

The Problem: You're applying for a visa that requires your passport to be valid for at least 180 days from your entry date.
The Solution: Set your planned arrival as the start date and your passport expiry as the end date. If the result exceeds 180 days, you're clear to travel.

💻 Remote Team Management

The Problem: You manage a team of digital nomads spread across Arabic, Spanish, and Hindi-speaking regions.
The Solution: Share timeandcal.com with them. Because the site is multilingual, your team in Riyadh sees the clock in Arabic, your team in Delhi sees it in Hindi — everyone stays synchronized in their own language.

💑 Anniversary Planning

The Problem: You're booking a surprise summer vacation and want the highlight to land exactly on your anniversary.
The Solution: Use the Anniversary Countdown inside the Calendar Calculator. Enter today and your next anniversary to calculate the exact days remaining with 100% precision.

How many time zones can I monitor simultaneously?
You can track your current location alongside 10 global cities on a single dashboard. Ideal for remote teams and international logistics — a real-time overview of global working hours without opening multiple tabs.
How does the Date Difference calculation work?
Our calculator provides a three-format breakdown of the duration between two dates: Total Days, Total Months and Days, and the standard Years, Months and Days format. Perfect for visa validity, project timelines, or calculating exact age.
Is timeandcal really free and private?
Yes. timeandcal is 100% free with no hidden charges or premium tiers. No registration required. Your 10 selected cities are saved locally on your device using browser localStorage — your data is never stored on our servers.
